About Us
Our Story
Founded by accident, kept alive on purpose.
Almost Home started in 2023 when a racing pigeon — dazed, banded, and exhausted — took up residence at an overpass in Danbury, Connecticut and refused to leave. A good Samaritan took notice; a phone call to a shelter led to "we don't take those." After a week of baiting and checking a trap, we had our first resident and, soon after, a waiting list of strangers with the same problem.
Since then we've grown into a small volunteer network across Connecticut and the Hudson Valley — fostering strays, exhausted racers, and city ferals that can no longer make it on their own, and matching the ones who won't be released back into the wild with people willing to give them a place to perch forever.
